In some surprising news, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) an often vocal member of Congress, extended what many are interpreting as a preemptive gesture to the other side of the aisle. With a Republican win in the Massachusetts special election Senate race, Frank seemed to be conciliatory…something that has unnerved many. “If a Republican had to win the seat…Scott Brown isn’t that bad.”

He quickly added, “Coakley ran an admirable race.”

Frank was referring to Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, who until a few weeks ago, was considered a lock to fill the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s seat in the deeply blue state.

Brown, a conservative Republican who wasn’t considered a serious threat until recently, had surged in many polls.

“Most polls, I don’t take seriously.” Rep Frank warned, “Still, we could do much worse than Scott Brown.”

When pressed on this comment Frank chuckled, “I’m just saying…”

The Representative moved the conversation to the current healthcare bill and the fact that its passage will be in jeopardy with a Brown win. When asked if this was a serious situation brewing, Frank quickly replied, “Vwery.”

Efforts made to paint Brown in a less than flattering light have thus far failed. An example of this recently resurfaced with a piece previously run in a 1980’s Cosmopolitan magazine article. Brown posed nude in a centerfold layout. Some thought this would create a stir during the campaign, but the pictures did not created the backlash many detractors thought.

Said Frank about the article, “I’ve seen the pictures…I don’t see a problem.”

Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton and President Obama, altered their schedules to rally the troops for Coakley after comments were made accusing the President, among others, of turning his back on the Massachusetts race. All of this to no avail, as Brown won by a wide margin. Some wondered if the President would weigh in on the comments that several attributed to Frank.

When asked to comment on Rep. Frank’s musings, the President had this to say, “Let me be clear, I will not turn my back on Massachusetts, the Democrats or Barney Frank.”
